ELA 8: (In response to question “What are the essential building blocks of sentences?”)
Each student will write eight diary entries set in a dystopian society in which the first entry contains all eight basic parts of speech. In each successive entry eliminate another part of speech from your sentences, until the last entry contains only one part of speech (which is technically possibly, but necessarily consisting of imperative sentences and interjections). Include in your entries what has gone wrong in your world that has caused these heinous restrictions on freedom of expression.
Concerning the nine quotations about building blocks shared with students, after a day to reflect on these quotes, students will share their impressions of which they found the most inspiring and why (Communication grade). They will write poems about how everything around us—and each of us ourselves—is made up of building blocks. They will write observations in their Writing Journals on these prompts: What have you built in your life? What can you build that’s permanent?
What are the building blocks of life, language, learning, and fulfillment?
